Gas will become more expensive in future regardless. The phase-out of the growers’ arrangement — the reduced tax rate on gas for growers — takes place between 2026 and 2035. The Act on fiscal climate measures for greenhouse horticulture was approved by both Houses of Parliament in December 2023.

Consequences of the legislation

The transition path for horticulture is clear now the law is in place. But prices will rise enormously in future — to as much as €0.70 (or more) for the tax alone in 2035. Currently the “bare” gas price is around €0.20 and growers pay about €0.09 in tax. That effectively amounts to roughly a tripling of the gas price for growers over a period of 10 years.

Electrification as the way forward

We’re talking about enabling electrification within existing connections. We first carry out an extensive analysis of the energy need throughout the year for the grower. On the source side we maximise — where possible — the grid connection for optimal utilisation.

Solar panels, a battery and heat storage combined with a good energy management system are then indispensable. We specifically look at false load systems, combined with heat pumps, e-boilers and heat storage.
